Whenever you mention to people that you are in the market for a second hand car, it is inevitable that at least one person will mention the adage ‘Caveat Emptor’, meaning ‘Let the buyer beware’. Though many of us brush it off as useless information, in fact there is a lot of truth in the Latin saying. Here are some reasons as to why this is the case when buying a used car.
The first thing that you must bear in mind is that privately purchased used cars are sold ‘as seen’. What this means is that it is your responsibility to inspect the vehicle before you then pay for it and nullify any responsibility that the seller had in describing the car fully. If something goes wrong with the vehicle even within seconds of driving it away, you have no legal position to ask for a refund for the purchase price and you will have to pay for any repair work yourself, in most circumstances.
Although the above information is all well and good, not all of us have a good understanding of car mechanics and are able to fully inspect a vehicle ourselves. If this is the case and you have the budget for it, you should consider sourcing the expertise of an experienced mechanic to help you. If you have a friend or family member that can help you with this then that is useful, but if not you could contact a local garage or go one step further and seek the services of a recognized organization such as the RAC or AA who offer car inspection services for a small fee.
If you do not have the budget to pay for a third party inspection, you will have to inspect the car yourself. This may seem overwhelming for some but anybody with a rough idea of vehicles can easily inspect basic components and parts for wear or damage after a little research on the subject. Car forums offer a wealth of information on specific vehicles and vehicles in general, and other car enthusiast sites even have used car buying guides that walk you through the important areas to check and how to check them.
While there may be nothing visually wrong with the vehicle, you should also make a note to find out about the history of the vehicle through hire purchase checks and vehicle history checks which can be done online or even by mobile telephone for a small fee. Many used cars are sold nowadays having been in an accident and then repaired and while light damage should not be any real cause for concern, if the car had previously been an insurance write-off it is important to find out how well it has been repaired and if it is truly safe to drive. The last thing to remember is to always test drive a vehicle before you buy it to see how well it drives on the road.
